How it works
How a creator affiliate program actually works, end to end.
The four stages behind every creator affiliate program that scales revenue — the commission model, recruiting, sales tracking, and payouts — and the decisions at each stage that make the next one possible.
01
Decide what your program rewards before you invite anyone
The commercial model comes first. Are you paying on every order, only on new customers, only on full-price products? That single decision shapes recruiting, creator expectations, and how much revenue the program can carry. Publish it once and stick to it — creators talk to each other, and inconsistent terms end programs faster than low rates do.
- —Flat commission — simplest to explain, easiest for creators to trust.
- —Tiered commission — higher rates for new customers or larger baskets.
- —Product-specific bounties — for launches, overstock, or hero products.
- —Hybrid — a small flat fee plus commission for your larger creators.
02
Recruit creators who already sell, not just creators who post
The best affiliate creators usually already buy from you. Start with customers, tagged posts, and your own community before you go looking for reach. Then make joining effortless: a form, instant approval, and their storefront live the same day. Every extra day between interest and first post is a creator who never activates.
- —Mine your customer list and inbound tags for creators already advocating.
- —Offer instant enrolment — approval, terms, and storefront in one flow.
- —Send a starter brief: which products convert, and what content works.
- —Keep a roster with rates, terms, and content rights in one record.
03
Track sales the way creators actually sell
Creators post short-form video, stories that expire, and lives nobody clicks through. Your tracking has to survive all of it — server-side events, first-party links, in-app checkouts, and a nightly reconciliation to your store. Last-click alone will under-count creator revenue by half, and under-counted creators stop posting.
- —Server-side, first-party tracking per creator storefront and link.
- —In-platform order capture for TikTok Shop and Instagram checkout.
- —Nightly reconciliation for refunds and cancellations.
- —Post-level attribution so you know which video sold which product.
04
Pay reliably, then scale the roster
Nothing kills a creator affiliate program faster than a late or wrong payout. Before you invite a hundred creators, prove you can calculate commission on net revenue, claw back refunds cleanly, handle tax paperwork, and pay internationally on schedule. Once payouts run themselves, adding creators becomes a growth lever instead of an ops burden.
- —Automated commission on net orders, not gross.
- —Refunds and chargebacks applied on the next cycle.
- —Tax paperwork (W-9 / W-8BEN) collected and stored per creator.
- —International payouts in the creator's local currency where possible.
